Wrath of le Tour - the analysis

The dust has settled and some are sitting on the spoils of winning. Others are licking their wounds and waiting for the next great fantasy competition. More on this later - Vuelta or Pro Cycling Challenge?

Alright, buckle up because I am having withdrawal from le Tour. Here is a team by team analysis of what went right or wrong for each team.

Let’s start at the top. The massive amount of respect that #1 in Sales 79-81, Spanning 2 decades!- Matthew Kurke has received in the office around the water cooler is almost palpable. How did he do it though? Was is it consistency, massive wins, strength on the flats, climbing mountains, or picking the podium? Well, it was a few of them. Mr. Kurke had Froome who led all scorers with 2246 points, Quintana who was second in scoring with 1902 points, Rodriguez who was 4th in scoring 1292 points, and Sagan who was 5th in scoring with 1269 points. He also outscored everyone in the final GC scoring by over 400 points. Pretty impressive. Good thing he didn't grab Kwiatkowski who was 3rd in points with 1445. Otherwise we all would have been in a world of hurt from the beginning.

We all know how our second place rider came to his spot. Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer won 10 of 22 stages and was second in two other stages. He was the carrot that everyone else was chasing, but only one person could get. He was 1100 points ahead of our third place team! But he still came up 200 points short.

Third place goes to Allez mes coureurs - Jeff Cook-Lundgren with 6105 points. Getting here took a lot a patience as his team was built for the mountains and the overall competition. The patience was worth the wait as he came in third in the final GC scoring. This was enough to get him on the podium.

The next three teams took different routes to almost get on the podium. Clean Air - Jed Friedrich, 5887 points, used the wait and pounce method and it worked. He came in second in the overall GC and was only on the stage podium one other time. Two Headed Monster - Scott Bromelkamp, 5747 points, had a steady climb to the top with a good finish at the end. Johnston Cycling Group - Vicki Johnston, 5607 points, was in the hunt from the beginning and launched an even attack. Unfortunately, her riders weren't quite high enough in the overall GC to get the job done.

Now a bunch of teams who didn't do that great:
Turn Over - Jess Braun, 4909 points, picked the favorites, but the rest of the picks didn't add up. Is her team name an indicator of next years team?
The green monster - Ryan Buus, 4864 points, did score well in the green jersey competition, but this didn't cut it.
Spinner B's - Bethany Buus, 4669 points, had three studs but in the end she needed more studs that that.
Saddle Dominators - Matt Holton, 4603 points, tried picking the second best rider on each team. This is not a good strategy.
Backseat DS - Whit Yost, 4483 points, had the closest view of the tour and did pick the winner of yellow and green. None of the other riders were in the top 30 fantasy scorers.
Team Bullseye - Steve Knutson, 4217 points, cheated off Whit and had the same three top scoreers. Next year you should cheat off someone else (unless Whit wins).
Moto Man - Justin Rath, 3786 points, was the winner of the fantasy Giro competition this Spring. I guess it really is too hard to do the Giro-Tour double.

Now we are to the last two spots.
Viva la Lance - Luke Dueffert, 2323 points, is a Wrath of le Tour rookie and it showed. The team looked good on paper, but picking previous winners of jerseys just doesn't cut it. Luke, welcome to the big leagues ;) Your time will come.

This years lantern rouge goes to Flo Ridas - Lizzy Sander with 1103 points. Lizzy had a lock on this spot from the beginning. She picked a great all around team with six riders who have finished in the top 10 of previous grand tours. Lady luck was not on her side though as only four of her riders scored points in this years tour.

We have not had a repeat winner in the Wrath of le Tour, but Lizzy you have repeated as the lantern rouge. Last year it was only by five points to, guess who... Matthew Kurke. Hang in there Lizzy, there is hope.

Here are some graphs if you like that kind of thing:

Here are some numbers if you like that kind of thing:Stage Scores

These are the riders you should have picked: Rider Scores

If you made it this far, congratulations!

Come back for more fantasy cycling fun in the near future.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 20 Results

Exciting stuff!!! The podium being decided on the last mountain stage isn't the norm. J-Rod put in a great effort although he had a pretty quiet tour. Did the podium shake up help or hurt your chances? Results are below.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 18 Results

Things are heating up!!!

#1 in Sales 79-81, Spanning 2 decades! - Matthew Kurke has taken a commanding 400 point lead for the second spot. Don't think you are safe though Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer because he is coming for you. As Mr. Kurke eloquently noted in a comment earlier this week, he has riders placed in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 10th in the real standings. This amounts to 2375 points if the riders stay in it until the end.

Will Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer keep the lead until the end? I think the writing is on the wall... The better question might be if he stays on the podium.  There are some hungry teams that are excited to see two more mountain stages.

A few riders got a few minutes. The remainder of the peloton rolled through together. Big winners were Fuglsang and Talansky. Backseat DS - Whit Yost jumped from 10th to 7th due to his last minute pick of Albasini who finished second today.

This is what tomorrow looks like. Finish is around 10:00 AM Central time. Should make for an exciting day. Will your riders hold their own?

Which Frenchman is most likely to win on Bastille Day? The bookies have Rolland, Voeckler and Pinot with the best odds. They will have to bet the best to get it done as the GC riders will be looking to better their spots.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 12 Results

Another sprint stage another crash. Exciting stuff, but too bad for the riders that went down. In fantasy news, it was more of the same.

That said, there is a hot, hot battle for the final podium. There are nine teams within 400 points of Spinner B's - Bethany Buus that are looking to overtake her spot. The flats are changing up the order that was established over the weekend, but they run out soon. Bumps on Saturday then the road turns up on Sunday.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 11 Results

Individual time trials are boring to watch (in my opinion) but are a great measure of how a rider is doing in a grand tour. Today confirmed that Froome is doing pretty well, in fact almost better than the absolute best in the discipline. Two of our fantasy cyclist picked the top two spots. That is what it takes to beat Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer this year as he his putting on a clinic. He currently leads the competition by 606 points!

In other news, le Tour is over half way over. This is sad.

Rest day #1 is over! The sprinters were all ready for their day in the sun. Unfortunately there is a case of whodunnit with the crash. All involved are safe and it still made for a great finish.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 9 Results

Monday they rest, Tuesday is flat, Wednesday is a TT, Thursday is flat, Friday is flat, and  Saturday is lumpy. One week from today it is Bastille Day and a mountain top finish on Mont Ventoux is scheduled. Should make for a great finish to the week!

There won't be too many GC shake ups in the actual race, but fantasy cycling will be on all week! Will Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer continue to pull away?

Today's podium welcomes three new teams to the Wrath of le Tour podium. Their scores rank first, second and fifth best stage scores to date. The only question is if there are enough mountains for them to make a solid run for the overall.

I made a mistake.  Maybe it was that last cup of coffee that put me over the edge. Flo Ridas - Lizzy Sander did not catapult up the results and remains our Lanterne Rouge.  Congratulations Lizzy.
Luke, you are safe for another day in 14th place.

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 7 Results

Week one is in the books!

Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer is the Orica Green-Edge of Wrath of le Tour thus far. He has won five of seven stages and holds a 307 point lead over Spinner B's - Bethany Buus in second place. All but five of the team decided to pick up Peter Sagan who is leading all riders with 602 points. Only Les Têtards has Michal Kwiatkowski who happens to be one of my new favorite riders.

The top five riders through Stage 7 are:
SAGAN Peter - 620
KWIATKOWSKI Michal - 401
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald - 359
GERRANS Simon - 336
KITTEL Marcel - 315

Tomorrow we go to the mountains. It should be good. Did you pick the right GC candidate?

Who is going to win atop AX3 Domains?
My pick is Dan Martin.

Post your pick in the comments below!

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 6 Results

Happy 4th of July!!!

The first week of racing in le Tour is always chaotic.  The mountain men fear it, the sprinters love it, and the reporters have plenty to write about.

The biggest losers in the GC hunt have to be Lotto Belisol who lost JVDB to injury and Astana who have one man within 7 minutes of the lead and two abandons already.

Most of the other GC riders have come unscathed through the first six stages.  This is rare, but nice to see.

Winners in le Tour so far are Orica Greenedge who have been winning stages, swapping yellow, getting buses stuck and bringing a distinct Australian feeling to France.

Look for more sprint trains running the peloton in the next couple days.

Go to instagram.com/bicyclingmag for some great images of le Tour from one of our seasoned Wrath of le Tour competitors, Whit Yost.

Stage 6 Podium:
Team Name - Manager - 6
Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer - 242
The green monster - Ryan Buus - 221
Johnston Cycling Group - Vicki Johnston - 216

1 - Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer - 1113

Wrath of le Tour - Stage 5 Results

Stage 5 Podium
Team Name - Manager - 5
Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer - 293
Johnston Cycling Group - Vicki Johnston - 265
The green monster - Ryan Buus - 262

GC - Team Name - Manager - GC
1 - Les Têtards - Charlie Sawyer - 871
2 - Spinner B's - Bethany Buus - 707
3 - The green monster - Ryan Buus - 667

Charlie has a strangle hold on first having won 3 of 5 stages thus far.  I think his domination will continue until Friday, then the roads turn up.  If the bookies are right, Charlie and his Les Têtards will maintain good form with the duo of Contador and Froome.

He is the early favorite.  Who can knock him off his pedestal?

Lizzy, you are the Lanterne Rouge. You are in good company though.  The bottom looks like this:
11 - Saddle Dominators - Matt Holton - 268
12 - Moto Man - Justin Rath - 262
13 - Viva la Lance - Luke Dueffert - 224
14 - Clean Air - Jed Friedrich - 195
15 - Flo Ridas - Lizzy Sander - 125

Matt Holton and Jed Friedrich are previous Rath of le Tour Winners, Justin Rath is "Rath of le Tour," and Luke Dueffert likes to golf barefoot.

25% through le Tour.  Lots of points to be scored.

Giddy up!

Sorry for the late post. I got lost on a bike ride.  Madison is nice to bike when you know where you are going.

I was wrong about Omega Pharma-Quickstep.  I am blaming it on Tony Martin's crash and being concussed two days ago.
